Maier Museum of Art
Art and SOL Tours
The staff and docents at the Maier Museum of Art are
looking forward to welcoming you to the Museum and engaging
your students with our Art & SOL
tours. These tours are designed to help achieve goals
set forth by the Virginia Department of Education’s
Standards of Learning. Art & SOL tours address objectives
in Art, English, History and Social Sciences.
Here you will find:
• A direct link to images of the artwork that
is currently on view at the Museum
• Specific SOLs supported by the tour
• Art vocabulary which may be incorporated into
the tour
• Pre-tour activity ideas to help prepare students
for Art & SOL
• Post-tour activity ideas to extend the Art &
SOL experience
Important logistics regarding your tour:
• Each school is responsible for scheduling
transportation to the Museum. Your scheduled time
indicates tour-starting time.
• In order to provide a good docent/student
ratio, we will guide your students through the Museum
in three groups. The groups will tour simultaneously,
each beginning in a different gallery. It is
important that there be at least one adult from
your school to accompany each of the three groups
of students. That way our docents can focus
on what they do best.
• Please let us know in advance if you have
any special-needs students. We want their tour to
be as meaningful as possible, and that may take
a bit of extra preparation on our part.
• Because our docents use an inquiry/discussion
method, they will interact extensively with your
students. To help facilitate dialogue and to make
each visitor feel comfortable and welcome, we ask
that you
PLEASE WEAR NAMETAGS!
P.S. An evaluation form will be given
to teachers at the end of each tour. Your responses
are essential to improve our program, so please help
us by returning the completed form to the Museum. You
may also call or email Martha Kjeseth Johnson, Curator
of Education, with any suggestions or concerns: 947-8136,
extension 3, mjohnson@randolphcollege.edu.
